After leaving OBHS I read geography at Bristol University 63-66, then did a planning qualification at Oxford Polytechnic 66-68. I married Mary Williams (yes, her maiden name was Williams!) in 1968. My first job was as a Planner for Gloucestershire County Council 68-70. Our daughter Helen Bridget was born in Gloucester in 1970. I worked as a Planner for Staffordshire County Council from 1970-72. Our son Michael William was born in 1972. From 1972 to 1976 I was a Lecturer (Planning) at Liverpool Polytechnic.
We then emigrated to New Zealand where I took up a lectureship (initially Planning and then Geographic Information Systems) at Massey University in Palmerston North. I began a successful planning programme, then ran GIS Diplomas. In 2004 I moved to a two-thirds appointment so that we could travel. We now exchange houses and travel for June,July, August and September each year. We have a house in the South of France, where we stay usually for June, July and September. We bought a house in Wellington on my retirement in 2009. I am Ringing Master at Wellington Cathedral. Non-work interests - genealogy, bell ringing.
